Agadir – Bank card payments in Morocco reached 230.1 million transactions worth MAD 70.8 billion ($7.24 billion) in 2025, marking a 20% increase in volume and a 12% rise in value compared with the previous year, according to Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM).

The number includes payments made at ATMs and online, the bank said in its 2025 annual report on financial market infrastructures and payment methods.

Despite this expansion, cash withdrawals continued to account for most bank card transactions in Morocco.

Withdrawals increased by 12% in volume, rising from 401 million transactions in 2024 to 450 million in 2025. Their total value also grew by 14%, from MAD 403 billion ($47.01 billion).

Card Payments Increase in Share

BAM’s figures show a gradual shift in the use of bank cards toward payments rather than cash withdrawals.

Payments accounted for 34% of card transactions by number in 2025, up from 32% in 2024. Meanwhile, withdrawals represented 66%, down from 68% a year earlier.

However, withdrawals maintained their dominant position in terms of value. They accounted for 87% of total card transaction value in 2025, compared with 86% in 2024, while payments’ share declined from 14% to 13%.

The payment ratio among Moroccan cardholders making transactions in Morocco increased in number, from 32.43% in 2024 to 33.85% in 2025. By value, the ratio edged down from 13.59% to 13.35%.

Electronic terminal and online payments rise

Electronic payment terminals recorded strong growth in 2025. Transactions through these terminals increased by 20%, from 153.3 million to 184.5 million.

Their total value reached MAD 58.6 billion ($5.99 billion), compared to MAD 52.2billion (5.33billion) in 2024.

E-commerce payments also continued to expand. Their number rose by 16% to 44.8 million transactions, while their total value increased by 10% to MAD 12.1 billion ($1.24 billion).

Payments through automated teller machines (ATMs) recorded a 9% increase in volume and a 30% rise in value, according to BAM.
