Antlers and “Servant” writer Henry Chaisson makes his feature directorial debut on the gothic horror-thriller Recluse, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year.
Bloody Disgusting’s Daniel Kurland raved in his 4-skull review out of Tribeca, “Henry Chaisson’s debut stands out from the many other high-minded haunted house horror films without succumbing to the same pretensions that often drag down these stories. It’s a grief-stricken character study that’s full of upsetting visuals that scratch at something visceral and raw.”
So when can you actually watch it for yourself? Deadline reports this afternoon that Vertical has picked up Recluse for distribution here in the United States, with a 2027 release planned.
“Making Recluse was an extraordinary journey alongside a truly exceptional cast and crew, and seeing it connect with audiences at Tribeca, Fantasia and FrightFest has been hugely rewarding,” Chaisson said this week. “I’m thrilled to be partnering with Vertical to bring it to the big screen.”
Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity, Hokum, Undertone) executive produce Recluse through his label Spooky Pictures. “Recluse is pure nightmare fuel – blending chilling storytelling, striking visuals and haunting sound design to deliver a totally immersive horror experience,” Schneider said in a statement. “With this fearless and loud debut, Henry is emerging as the next great horror auteur – and as the film begins its festival journey, it’s a thrill to be along for the ride.”
“Henry, along with legendary horror producer Steven Schneider, has crafted a chilling, atmospheric thriller that will keep audiences on edge,” said Vertical’s Peter Jarowey. “After strong festival showings including its world premiere, we’re thrilled to bring Recluse to theaters next year.”
Sasha Frolova (The Empty Man) stars in Recluse as Joan, a solitary audio engineer who returns to her family’s decaying country estate after receiving a call from her ailing father, an acclaimed but reclusive artist rumored to have dabbled in the occult.
Unearthing a malevolent secret decades in the making, Joan must determine whether the horrors she faces are the product of her father’s misdeeds or her own troubled mind.
Mia Vallet (“Believe”), Xander Berkeley (Candyman), Kimball Farley, Toby Poser (Hellbender), Frankie Seratch, Gillian Cooper, and Christine Nyland also star.
