The Environment Agency introduced navigation restrictions on the River Thames waterway from St John’s Lock in Gloucestershire to Osney Lock in Oxford on Saturday, July 25.

The measures became necessary after a prolonged period of hot, dry weather over the summer, to conserve water within the river system for navigation and water abstraction.

Amid the first storms of the season, the agency announced on Friday, October 23 that the navigation restrictions have now been lifted.

A statement said: “Drought restrictions between St Johns and Osney, and between Goring and Culham have been lifted today.

“There are still drought restrictions in place on the Thames, please check the River Thames Restrictions and Closures page for more details.”

Restrictions that remain are for specific locks and reaches of the waterway caused by other reasons, such as moorings being closed or alerts like submerged vessels.
