York Avenue in East Cowes was shut by Southern Water on October 7, with works scheduled to last for three weeks.

Parts of the sewer outside the recreation ground had badly deteriorated and one section had collapsed.

Southern Water said the road would have to be dug up and the sewer pipe replaced.

But since then, workers have found the damage to be worse than first feared, meaning more of the pipe must now be replaced.

The repairs will now continue until November 6.

A Southern Water spokesperson said: “We’re sorry for the inconvenience this causes residents and commuters and thank them for their patience.”

York Avenue is also the main route for Red Funnel ferry traffic.

A Red Funnel spokesperson said: “Whilst we hope the impact of this will be minimal, it may cause some traffic delays at busier times – if you are travelling on our vehicle ferry on these dates, please allow additional time to arrive for check-in.”

Diversion routes are in place via Adelaide Grove and Victoria Grove and to facilitate traffic along Adelaide Grove, temporary no-parking restrictions are being enforced through cones.

The road is shut between Connaught Road and John Nash Avenue.
