Wigan Council confirmed the outage in Golborne and Lowton this afternoon (Sunday, October 25) after a tree came down on Slag Lane, damaging a telephone pole.
Electricity North West’s website states that the company is investigating the power cut and estimates that supplies will be restored by 6pm on Tuesday, October 27.
An emergency rest centre is being set up at Ashton Leisure Centre, Old Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield, for residents affected by the outage.
People who can make their own way to the centre have been urged to do so, although limited transport is available for those unable to travel independently.
Residents needing a lift should meet a member of council staff at Golborne Parkside, Rivington Avenue, Golborne.
Wigan Council said the tree had also damaged a telephone pole and confirmed Slag Lane would remain closed until repairs could be safely carried out.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Electricity North West and council staff are at the scene.
The electricity restoration time is an estimate and may change as investigations and repair work continue.
