We are very sad to learn of the passing of Stephen Kovacevich, a hugely admired and recorded pianist who recorded Viennese classical masters as if to the manner born. Stephen came from Los Angeles and lived most of his life in London. He was one of the most honest, self-examining artists I have known.
After suffering a stroke 20 years ago Stephen painstakingly recovered his playing ability and gave many moving performances.
Unfailingly polite and solicitous of others, he had lengthy romantic relationships with Jacqueline du Pre and Martha Argerich.
He was 86.
