Popular action series Gangs of London has been renewed for a fourth season by Sky.

In an official statement, the broadcaster promised to bring back the “visceral action, high-stakes drama and bold storytelling that have made it a true fan favourite”.

Noting that “further details of the story, cast and creative team will be announced in due course”, Sky refrained – at least for now – from sharing a release date.

Gangs of London, which aired a “cut-throat” season three finale in March, has left fans with plenty of questions following the deaths of Sean Wallace (Joe Cole), Ed Dumani (Lucian Msamati) and Billy Wallace (Brian Vernel).

Earlier this year, Digital Spy spoke with Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù – aka Elliot Carter – about the possibility of a fourth instalment.

“There’s an air of uncertainty at the end of season three,” Dìrísù explained. “And I think we could feel that in the [final] performance [between Billy and Elliott]. I don’t know which way this is going to go. Neither does Brian [Vernel].

“I don’t know if the writers know which way it’s going to go, so the air was pregnant with possibility, with uncertainty, and then with the history of the shoot so far, I think it’s just raw.”

More recently, producer Hugh Warren shared his thoughts on season four and hinted that fans should “expect the unexpected”.

Speaking with Variety in June, Warren said: “It was a shock when Sean died, it was a shock when Ed died – people really didn’t expect that. But I think they’ve learned through three seasons to just expect the unexpected.

“The temptation is to hang on to those characters, because they’re great, but it’s also exciting to keep reinvigorating the show and ‘regenerating’ it. This way, each season is different and feels fresh.”

Warren said that the creative team “have some great things in mind” for future episodes, adding: “I think it’s really important for the audience to understand that, by killing these lead characters, there’s no predicting what happens next.”

Season four of Gangs of London has yet no release date.
