Manchester United have reportedly agreed to Marcus Rashford’s exit from Old Trafford with Barcelona in ‘final talks’ over the transfer.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Catalan club have made an offer via intermediaries to United over a loan deal with the option to buy the forward next summer. The Reds are believed to have agreed to this proposal and now Barca are advancing with the deal.
It is understood that Barca’s manager Hansi Flick has spoken to Rashford and has agreed to the club pushing ahead for the 27-year-old. MEN Sport understands that the goal for Rashford has always been to join Barca and that he has employed the efforts of a Spanish agency to try and push through a move to the club.
The forward wanted to move to La Liga in January when it became clear that his relationship with Ruben Amorim had reached breaking point. However, he ended up moving to Aston Villa instead.
From United’s perspective, the departure of Rashford this summer was seen as being a foregone conclusion. Following his loan stint at Villa, the West Midlands club decided not to activate the forward’s £40m option to buy.
He would then inform United, along with Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia, that he wished to move on this summer. Despite being handed an extended break to push through a move elsewhere, Rashford has returned to Carrington in recent weeks to undertake an individual training plan.
While there had been a desire to sell Rashford permanently, a loan move was always seen as the best option for Barcelona. Their financial position has been heavily scrutinised by La Liga and a loan with option to buy is seen as the quickest way to get this deal done.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco mentioned earlier this summer that his team wanted to purchase Rashford. Flick’s side have been looking for a winger who can also play as a centre-forward when needed and Rashford fits that bill.
Their initial top target was Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams. However, the forward signed a ten-year contract extension at the Basque club to end Barca’s hopes of signing him.
