Before landing a role in the US TV drama ‘Suits’, Meghan Markle was described as “impatient to make a start as a proper actress”, despite facing multiple rejections. Biographer Sean Smith wrote in his book, Meghan Misunderstood, that shortly after graduating, Meghan wanted to make it in Hollywood.
Smith recounts an early audition moment for Meghan Markle, who wasn’t content to settle for the role that she had auditioned for. At the time, Smith explains how Meghan told the director, after he asked her to repeat a line: “I can. However, I’ve read the script and I really respond to this other role and I’d like to audition for that.”
As reported in the Daily Mail, Smith wrote: “This was not how auditions worked. ‘This panic spread across the room because who does that?’ Who takes that sort of risk?’ She didn’t get the part she wanted, but she did secure Hot Girl #1”.
Meghan landed the role in A Lot Like Love, starring Ashton Kutcher. In Smith’s recount, it’s not the size of the role, but what the role offered Meghan Markle, which was her first real foot in the door of Hollywood.
Smuth writes: “She sits beside Ashton on a plane and says ‘Hi’, but then has a brief exchange with the passenger sitting across the gangway and tells him her name is Natalie.”
The role led to TV guest spots, appearances on shows like CSI: NY, and eventually to the breakout role of Rachel Zane on Suits.
As a teenager, Meghan participated in high school theatrical productions. Her father, Thomas Markle, told biographer Tom Bower: “She wants to be the star of the stage and the star in life.”
From 2010 to 2012, Meghan also ran an anonymous blog called Working Actress, which predated The Tig and chronicled the ups and downs of life in the industry.
Now, years after marrying into the Royal Family, but quitting as a working royal in 2020, Meghan Markle has a show of her own titled ‘With Love, Meghan’.
Series two returns on August 26, and features guests such as model Chrissy Teigen, and podcast host, Jamie Kern Lima.
Having recently signed a new “first-look” deal with the streaming giant, Meghan Markle said: “We’re proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand. My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.”
