A case of déjà-vu for Philipsen who takes the red jersey with stage 1 win at the Vuelta

Jasper Philipsen has now won the opening stages of both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in the same season, a feat that was last achieved by Fabian Cancellara in 2009.

Seven weeks after winning stage 1 of the Tour de France, Jasper Philipsen and his Alpecin-Deceuninck team perfectly executed the opening sprint of the Vuelta a España, which puts the Belgian into the red jersey of race leader.

The slightly hectic finale came at the end of a relatively simple day out for the Vuelta peloton, a six-man breakaway becoming a solo outing for debutant Hugo de la Calle (Burgos Burpellet BH), who was finally caught just inside the last 40 km.

It was a nervous run-in from there with GC teams and sprinters alike determined to maintain safety and control at the front of the peloton. Alpecin-Deceuninck meanwhile, played it cool and calm, overcoming an overshot roundabout about 8 km out to position Philipsen on the inside line for the curving finale.
