Newcastle United supporters know all too well about the frustrations of Profit and Sustainability Rules. Rival fans may use the ‘richest club in the world’ tag when being critical of the Magpies, but ultimately they cannot match the spending of the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool this summer because of the rigid PSR rules which last summer didn’t just hamper incomings but saw players forced out.
It’s a situation shared at Aston Villa, who are struggling to bring in the necessary players to allow them to kick on from a season spent in the Champions League. Unai Emery’s men have picked up just one point from two games (the draw with Newcastle) and are yet to score a goal this season, with a need for more threats up top.
It has once again been a difficult summer transfer window for the club as they again sell good players to help comply with spending restrictions laid down by the Premier League and UEFA.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games this season, an increase of up to 100 more.
It is a situation slammed on Match of the Day by pundits Alan Shearer and Micah Richards, a former Villa player, with Shearer comparing it to the frustrations at St James’ Park.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said; “They are hampered. They can try and get players in on loan. The PSR situation doesn’t sit well with me in terms of what they can and can’t spend.
“Emre has had six transfer windows and they’ve made a profit of £10m at Villa. PSR was not brought in for this situation at Aston Villa where they clearly have an owner who has got the money. It’s the same with Newcastle as well. It is a really difficult situation to be in.
Richards added: “I was in the Villa team that got relegated, so to see the transformation there, to now get into the Champions League, but they can’t buy any players, it’s ridiculous. They are having to sell academy products as well, so it’s just not sitting right with me.”
