A 13-year-old Tameside girl was found unresponsive before suffering four cardiac arrests, an inquest opening into her death has heard.

Casey-Louise Horrocks, from Mossley, was found by emergency services at a property on Sheepridge Road in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, at 11.36pm on Monday, August 11.

An inquest into the tragedy opened at Bradford Coroner’s Court this morning (August 26).

A 16-year-old boy who was arrested on suspicion of her rape and murder has been released on bail.

Giving details on the circumstances of Casey-Louise’s death, coroner’s officer Victoria Normington told the court: “Yorkshire Ambulance Service were called to a house in Huddersfield regarding an unresponsive teenager.

“CRT was commenced and Casey was admitted to the Calderdale Royal Hospital where she was initially unresponsive and unconscious.

“She was taken for scans and CPR was commenced as she then suffered four cardiac arrests. She was sadly pronounced dead life extinct at 2.18am on August 12.”

The court heard a post-mortem had taken place but failed to establish a formal cause of Casey-Louise’s death.

Assistant coroner Peter Merchant adjourned the inquest until February 26, 2026, while West Yorkshire Police’s homicide team investigates Casey-Louise’s death.

Casey-Louise was a student at Mossley Hollins High School, which described her as ‘bright, full of character, always full of life, and never afraid to be herself’.

Tameside council, which was Casey-Louise’s ‘corporate parent’, has announced a safeguarding review will take place.

DCI Stacey Atkinson, from West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, said in a previous statement: “We are continuing to conduct a number of enquiries following the death of a 13-year-old girl following an incident at a flat on Sheepridge Road.

“A post-mortem was not able to determine how she died and we continue to treat her death as unexplained at this time, pending more enquiries.

“Those enquiries are complex and are likely to be lengthy as we work to fully understand the circumstances of the girl’s death. Specially trained officers are supporting her family at this time.”
