Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn also star in the pic, which has its Canadian premiere at Toronto next month. Nomadland double Oscar winner Zhao directs based on the novel by Maggie O’Farrell, who adapted the script along with the filmmaker.

O’Farrell’s 2020 novel was a New York Times bestseller, has sold more than 2 million copies in the UK and U.S. and has been translated into 40 languages. Hamnet won the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction and the Fiction Prize at the 2020 National Book Critics Circle Awards and was shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize and longlisted for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. 

Focus Features releases the film from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment in select theaters on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, before taking it wide on December 12. The producers are Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Sam Mendes and Spielberg.
