No-spend challenges, which encourage people to go on a spending fast by abstaining from buying anything but the bare essentials, have been de rigueur on social media in recent years. But on TikTok, September has emerged as an especially popular month to embark on this personal finance trend.
Pursuing the “nospendseptember” challenge – which involves only spending money on necessities such as rent or mortgage payments, groceries, utility bills, and fuel for your car throughout the month – makes sense. After all, much of the back-to-school expenses have already been incurred, the carefree holiday spending is behind you, and you still have financial breathing space before expenses start to rack up due to winter energy bills and Christmas.
