England player ratings: England finished their July campaign with a comprehensive 40-5 victory over the USA in Washington D.C. on Saturday.

Following delays due to lightning strikes, England were slightly slow to get going, but were able to snaffle an early USA attack, and did not relent after that.

With six debutants in a much-changed squad from the one that faced Argentina last week, this was a strong end to England’s season.

Here’s how the players rated:

15. Joe Carpenter – 7.5
Safe under the high ball when some of his team-mates struggled. That’s the primary job of a full-back, but he embellished his display with some probing runs. Started the second-half perfectly chasing and retrieving England’s kick-off. A debut the Sale Shark can be proud of.

14. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso – 7
One routine high ball was put down after 15 minutes – maybe a byproduct of the conditions. Busy in the first half, though with little reward. Sliced through the US defence on the hour to put Harry Randall in for a try. Took a hit that echoed like more thunder in the closing stages.

13. Luke Northmore – 8
No one deserved to score England’s second try more than the Harlequin – he won the turnover from the floor, which allowed England to kick downfield and eventually score. In the USA’s faces in defence, which is vital in England’s structure, and had some nice touches going forward, particularly his quick pass to Quins club-mate Cadan Murley for his try.

12. Max Ojomoh – 9
Put a huge defensive shot in early on to make a statement in the opening minutes of his Test career, and followed it up with a few more. His handling was just as devastating, putting Northmore in for his second try with a rapid flat pass. Another delectable skip pass put Northmore in for a break moments into the second half, which Jack van Poortvliet finished. His enthusiasm did spill over into a neck roll in the first half, though. Another brilliant debut.

11. Cadan Murley – 8.5
Always hunting for breaks and big carries, but that overzealous attitude did result in a high tackle following a kick chase at one point. His energy and desire to carry was rewarded with a try at the end of the first half, stepping off his left foot to beat a handful of US tacklers.

10. George Ford – 8.5
If there was space to exploit – and there was – the England captain was able to identify it and punish the hosts, be it with his kicking or passing. In a month where England have looked superb with some brilliant individual performances, Ford has been England’s best play. Kicked from the tee well on top.

9. Jack van Poortvliet – 7.5
Forced a yellow card from Chris Hilsenbeck with the pace he was playing with from the floor, forcing the US fly-half to slap a ball away to prevent an England break. Summed up a lively display where he was on hand to score England’s fourth try after the break.

1. Bevan Rodd – 7
After struggling to gain any ascendancy in the opening few scrums, a huge effort gave England the platform to score their second try and won a penalty 10 minutes later. Won a scrum penalty immediately after the weather delay and yet another after the break before being subbed off. His work in attacking rucks helped England function.

2. Curtis Langdon – 6
Opened the scoring from the back of a maul and was largely solid at the lineout, though the USA did pluck two from the air in quick succession at the end of the first half and he got his timing slightly wrong in the second half too, maybe a sign of a communication problem with his jumpers.

3. Asher Opoku-Fordjour – 6
Alongside Rodd, he put England on the front foot for their second try with a big push, but it was not always plain sailing in the scrum for the tighthead. Fairly quiet in the loose.

4. Alex Coles – 7
Penalised for a high tackle early on and pinged again in his own 22 after 20 minutes when going for the ball after a collapsed maul. There is a lot to love about his work rate in the engine room, hitting rucks consistently to help England’s attack, but his discipline has been a slight concern over the past month. A charge-down in the second half typified his harassing presence.

5. Arthur Clark – 7.5
Pilfered a USA lineout just metres from his own line early on in the match, and that became a common theme throughout the match. England’s go-to on their own ball, but was beaten in the air a couple of times late in the first half. In his first Test, the Gloucester lock showed he has the physical presence and stamina to make an impact in the international game.

6. Chandler Cunningham-South – 8
Strong steal in contact early on, which is exactly what the 22-year-old wanted to remind Borthwick of his physical presence. That was there throughout, with some bruising tackles, and another rip in a maul.

7. Guy Pepper – 6
Completely stultified a brief period of US momentum with a breakdown penalty in the second half. Was pinged a few times equally. In a high-scoring match, the hard work of the openside could be overlooked, but tirelessly hit rucks.

8. Alex Dombrandt – 5.5
Ran off Ford well, attacking half gaps. Had one try disallowed but would have thought he was going to score soon after, only to lose the ball shortly before the line. Went on to knock the ball on soon after that. Swings and roundabouts, though, as he also collected a sloppy pass that many would have fumbled. Led the match for carries (12) when he left the field, but will be disappointed with a few errors.

Replacements – 8
With the score 26-0 to England when Steve Borthwick decided to make his first substitutions, it was just a case of maintaining control, which the bench did. Ben Curry and Harry Randall (scoring his own try following a Feyi-Waboso break) added more energy to the display, if anything. Gabriel Oghre (who scored after breaking off a driving maul and had a number of punchy carries), Charlie Atkinson and Oscar Beard continued the theme of great debuts.
