Meghan Markle has faced fierce criticism for making an “extraordinary” blunder regarding her Royal title after insisting that guests on her Netflix series use her “real” surname of Sussex.
The Duchess, whose second series of Netflix’s With Love, Meghan, launched on the streaming platform this week, has been adamant about her surname being Sussex rather than Markle following her marriage to Prince Harry – even going as far as correcting actress Mindy Kaling in an early episode of the programme.
During a fresh interview with journalist Emily Chang, Meghan confirmed that her legal name is now Meghan, Duchess of Sussex – but an experienced Royal commentator claimed the statement exposed an “extraordinary” blunder on her part and provided insight into her perspective on the Royal family.
“This is extraordinary and I want to know exactly who it is that is schooling her,” CNN Royal commentator Victoria Arbiter said.
“Because she insists on saying that her legal name is ‘Meghan, Duchess of Sussex’, but actually, to the royal boffins out there, they’ll know that that denotes a royal divorcee,” reports the Express.

Ms Chang highlighted the post-divorce titles of Diana, Princess of Wales and Sarah, Duchess of York as proof of the Royal family tradition.
“It’s extraordinary that [Meghan] is opting to go with that, because she’s not a divorcee,” she told the Australian lifestyle network 9Honey.
Considering Meghan’s connection to her Royal title, Ms Chang added: “It’s kind of all she has that people are really interested in.
“It always comes back to the royal in-laws. It always comes back to that royal life, and it’s because that’s their biggest cash cow to milk.”

This follows King Charles’s second cousin Lord Ivar Mountbatten’s criticism of Meghan’s assertion that ‘Sussex’ was the surname she and Harry used for their children – suggesting instead that the family should adopt the traditional ‘Mountbatten-Windsor’ name.
“It’s interesting because she’s completely incorrect,” he stated to Town and Country Magazine. “They are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but actually he’s Harry Mountbatten-Windsor and she would be Meghan Mountbatten-Windsor.”

Elsewhere, Prince Harry is set to reunite with his father, King Charles, for the first time in 20 months when he touches down in Britain in a fortnight – though Prince William has snubbed any chance of making peace with his sibling.
The warming of ties between the Duke of Sussex and the monarch follows behind-the-scenes talks with Buckingham Palace aides. Harry is anticipated in London on September 8 – marking three years since Queen Elizabeth II’s passing – to attend the WellChild Awards, a charitable cause he has championed for years.
The duo haven’t crossed paths since January of last year, during which time His Majesty has been receiving cancer treatment.
