FARMINGTON — A field of 10 New York-bred fillies and mares will battle in the $50,000 Arctic Queen Stakes at Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack on Monday. The six-furlong sprint will be run as the eighth race on the nine-race Labor Day card.
The upstart 3-year-old filly Zi End has been made the 5/2 morning line favorite. Dismissed at odds of 31-1 in her career debut on May 26, the daughter of Weekend Hideaway has been nothing short of sensational ever since she hit the track, wheeling off five wins in her six starts for breeder, trainer and co-owner Debra Breed. She is also co-owned by Kariann Breed. Jockey Joel Cruz, who is unbeaten on Zi End, gets the return call.
In her most recent start, Zi End dominated state-breds in a preliminary Allowance condition, winning by over eight lengths under a hand ride.
“We stopped on her as a 2-year-old, not really showing us that much,” Debra Breed said, “but she was a different filly in the spring. She’s really matured, keeps getting better and is coming into the race the right way. We think she’ll run well.”
That said, she’ll get tested moving to the stakes ranks.
Trainer Brad Cox is shipping in 2024 New Yorks Oak winner Caldwell Luvs Gold for her second FLGR visit. A five-time winner, returns to Finger Lakes with an impressive career bankroll of $501,665. In her most recent start, the $150,000 Johnstone Stakes at Saratoga Racecourse, Caldwell Luvs Gold stumbled at the start and had to settle for fourth. Listed as the second choice at 3/1, she’ll be under the direction of FLGR leading jockey Andre Worrie. The wildcard in the field could be True Empress. She has had her greatest success at this oval, with nine wins and two seconds in 12 starts. She has earned $416,202 lifetime. She starts out at 5/1 on the line.
The Michael S. Ferraro-trainee will begin the Labor Day Feature from a cozy rail post with Luis Perez in the irons. Ferraro has saddled three different winners of the Arctic Queen Stakes in the past.
Also on Monday, the Jockey Footrace will be held after the fifth race to support the Permanently Disabled Jockey Fund (PDJF). Members of the local jockey colony will run 70 yards from the starting gate. FLGR will donate $200 per entrant to the PDJF.
The PDJF provides financial aid to over 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Founded in 2006, the organization has paid out over $11.5 million to permanently disabled jockeys, most of whom have suffered paralysis or traumatic brain injuries. The annual Labor Day at the Races featuring free live racing programs and a special lunch deal with one-dollar hot dogs and soft drinks. The Tin Cup Bar will be serving three-dollar domestic draft beers. Admission and parking are free. Post time for the first race is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Arctic Queen Stakes honors the former Finger Lakes great. Trained by Ed Perdue throughout her career, Arctic Queen ran in six stakes races at Finger Lakes and won them all. After finishing second in her career debut in 1989, she won her next eight FLGR starts, beating males in the 1990 Ontario County Stakes and the 1991 Prophet Wise Stakes.
In winning track Horse of the Year honors in 1991, she became the first horse to win the honor in back-to-back years since the great Fio Rito (who did so in 1979, 1980 and 1981).
