Since it began, Downton Abbey has remained an absolute fan-favourite, standing at a very strong 8.7/10 average user score on IMDb from over 237,000 ratings.

“Downton Abbey is a timeless masterpiece,” reads one particularly glowing review. “It is unquestionably among the greatest period dramas produced in the twenty-first century. The program is proof of the impact that great writing, superb casting, and sincere performances can have.”

Another called it a “mesmerizing examination of class distinction”, stating: “Downton Abbey is one of the things the British do best.”

Plenty of reviews praised the lavish production values and the cinematography, as well the performances from plenty of the British greats, such as Hugh Bonneville, Dan Stevens, Penelope Wilton, and the late Maggie Smith.

Obviously Smith won’t be in the new film but both Bonneville and Michelle Dockery have stated that the film will pay tribute to her, while Elizabeth McGovern said that she is “still very much in the atmosphere”.

Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale is released in cinemas on 12 September. The series is available on Disney+, Netflix, and ITVX Premium. The first two films have to be purchased or rented at the time of writing.
