Former Super League man Chris Sandow has been handed a prison sentence down under.
Sandow, who spent one and a half seasons with Warrington Wolves during his playing days, was caught with a rifle in public while also throwing rocks at cars. The former playmaker, who is 36 years old, pleaded guilty at Ipswich Magistrates Court to the offences, which took place earlier this year.
The police were initially alerted to Sandow’s actions in March, after damaging two vehicles by throwing rocks at them. Officers found Sandow in possession of a rifle, as well as a hunting knife, ammunition, methamphetamine and two glass smoking pipes, before he went on to resist arrest.
As such, after entering a guilty plea, Sandow has been sentenced to 12 months in custody, with a 15-month suspended sentence for previous offences being reactivated. With his sentence taking into the account the time he spent in custody prior to sentencing, he will be eligible for parole in March next year.
Sandow made 190 appearances over the course of his career, with the majority of his time in the game being spent in the NRL. The former half-back started out with South Sydney Rabbitohs down under and made 84 outings in green and red, while also winning the Dally M award for rookie of the year in 2008.
He joined Parramatta Eels in 2012 in a four-year deal but he struggled for consistency at first. He won the Eels’ player of the season award in 2014, but he was released and allowed to join Warrington Wolves the following year after number of issues.
He joined the Wolves in time to represent them in the Super 8s, before helping the club to the Challenge Cup final and the Grand Final in 2016. Warrington lost on both occasions and he left the Halliwell Jones Stadium shortly after the Super League Grand Final having played 31 games and scored 12 tries in primrose and blue.
