England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has posted an update on social media after failing to secure a proposed move away from Manchester United this summer.

Mainoo’s future at United appeared to be hanging in the balance after he requested a loan move last week. The Reds’ response was one of defiance, with United head coach Ruben Amorim keen to retain the young midfielder.

As the transfer window closed on Monday, it was evident that the 20-year-old would not be leaving Old Trafford, and would remain a United player until at least January. Mainoo’s desire to leave the North West was driven by his limited playing time this season.

And the Reds academy graduate appears to be working hard during the international break – after missing out on an England call-up for September’s World Cup qualifiers.

“Nothing pretty,” he said on Instagram on Friday, alongside several pictures of him training and working in the gym. Mainoo’s post has received several comments from United players – including Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee – while captain Bruno Fernandes and Patrick Dorgu have liked it.

Amorim has urged Mainoo to fight for his place in United’s first-team after failing to secure a starting spot in the Premier League so far this season.

“I want Kobbie to stay,” Amorim told a news conference last Friday.

“He needs to fight for his place and we need Kobbie, so that’s not going to change. I understand that the players that are not playing in this moment are disappointed.

“Everyone will have the same opportunity to play. You have to fight during the week.”

Mainoo will be hoping to play a key role in United’s next match – which is the season’s first Manchester derby on September 14. The young star has good memories of that fixture, having scored in the Reds’ FA Cup final win over Pep Guardiola’s side in 2024.

The fan favourite will then have a chance to impress against Chelsea – who were one of several clubs linked with Mainoo during the summer transfer window.
