The Newmarket valuation day on September 18, offers sellers a chance to have their items assessed and potentially included in the sale.

Mr Piggott’s saddle is estimated to be worth between £8,000 and £12,000 and carries a personal touch with his initials.

It will be sold with a letter of authenticity from the jockey himself, confirming its use in “numerous classic and big race wins”.

Mr Piggott rode 4,493 winners on the flat and was hailed a “genius on a racehorse” with 116 Royal Ascot and 5 2000 Guineas winners to his name.

The saddle was initially donated by the 86-year-old for a charity auction in 1986.

Also up for grabs is Mr Piggott’s last car, a 1998 Mercedes CLK320, which is expected to fetch between £3,000 and £5,000 at auction.

The car was bought new by the nine time Derby winner.

Other interesting racing memorabilia for sale include a Irish horse racing trophy from 1701.

Racing fans will also be able to bid on a set of Frankel silks worn by jockey Tom Queally. The race-worn silks could fetch up to £10,000.

Graham Budd, chairman of the auction house said: “This sale has grown hugely in its significance over three decades and is now seen as the auction in which to consign truly important racing items. In its own way it has become an occasion on which racing history is often made with items that carry the essential DNA of British racing.”
