Just after kicking off their latest international orchestral tour, Iceland’s Sigur Rós have announced they are revisiting their fourth studio album, Takk…, with a special 20th anniversary reissue.
Due out September 26th via Krunk, the Takk… re-release will come in 3xLP vinyl and 1xCD formats, as well as a special box set of five 10-inch vinyl (limited to just 3,000 copies) exclusively available via their official webstore. Rounding out the 20th anniversary celebration is the LP’s new “Dolby Atmos spatial mix,” which will be available digitally on the album’s original release date of September 12th.
Regardless of the version/format, the entire LP has been expertly remastered by Sterling Sound’s Ted Jensen (the mastering engineer behind everything from the Eagles’ Hotel California to Green Day’s American Idiot).

Before the full album drops, you can now listen to five rare tracks from the vinyl and digital editions below. Those are the original B-sides from 2006’s Sæglópur EP — “Refur,” “Ó Friður,” and “Kafari” — alongside two never-before-released songs, “Melrakki” and “Elfur.”
Takk… was Sigur Rós’ major label debut and their commercial breakthrough, moving over 200,000 copies during the first year of its release in the US. In a statement, multi-instrumentalist Kjartan Sveinsson went as far as calling it their “happy album.” Sure, songs like “Hoppípolla” are about “jumping in puddles,” and “Heysátan” tells the story of a “contented” farmer who is “crushed [to death] by his own bale.” But what really makes Takk… so engaging and transcendent has less to do with lyrics and themes and more with the wealth of universal sentiments it brings to the surface with absolute grace and care.
“It is weird to think that some guys from Iceland who sing in Icelandic and some nonsense language are able to play all over the world and have so many people want to come and see us,” added frontman Jónsi. “There are no lyrics or stories for people to hold on to. It’s more about pure emotions that people experience from the music.”
The European leg of the aforementioned orchestral tour is in full swing. Sigur Róswill touch down in North America beginning in early November, with shows in San Diego, Vancouver, San Francisco, and Mexico City, among other locales. Check out the full schedule below; grab your tickets here.
