Irish Olympian boxer Daina Moorehouse bowed out of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool after she suffered a split decision defeat to Laura Fuertes Fernandez of Spain.

In what was a tight and fiercely contested bout, Moorehouse was narrowly edged out on the judges scorecards, with a 3-2 split decision going against her.

Fernandez, who has won medals at the World and European Games, was able to dig deep and find an extra level just when it mattered most as a strong final round saw her take the decision.

Judges scored the bout 28:29, 29:28, 29:28, 28:29, 29:28.

It was a similar story for Donegal southpaw Matthew McCole, who lost to Ronald Chavez Jnr of the Philippines on a split decision.

In what was McCole’s first major senior tournament, a 3-2 split decision went against him.

This evening Zara Breslin takes on Gizem Ozer of Turkey in the 60kg division with Aoife O’Rourke face Czechia’s Monika Langerova at 75kg.
