With Mack Boyd’s fate revealed on Emmerdale on Monday, it was teased it might not be over and he could still face a grim fate.

John Sugden has been holding him captive in an underground bunker for weeks, after appearing to kill him earlier this month. Mack made a desperate bid for freedom and nearly got away last week, only for John to track him down and capture him once more.

After it was teased John had killed Mack, Monday’s episode revealed he was still alive but in a bad way. In a heartbreaking twist, John told him he wasn’t coming back and was going to leave Mack there.

As Mack pleaded with him not to leave him to die, John sickeningly left him an injection containing something. John encouraged Mack to use it if he wanted a painless death, telling him it would end his suffering.

John commented in the episode: “You want to stop the suffering? You now have a choice to inject yourself. There’ll be no pain. You’ll just feel drowsy and drift off into a deep sleep. This is the last time you see me. I won’t be coming back again.”

The cruel twist left Mack horrified as he realised he was likely trapped forever, with John claiming he would not return. But will Mack be able to escape, and will someone help free him?

Fans are thinking a character will managed to track Mack down, but it’s not who viewers previously expected. Robert Sugden has been tipped previously to find Mack and save him from killer John.

But amid a stunt week twist that sees John drag his husband Aaron Dingle off the edge of a cliff, fans now think a different character will figure out the truth and find Mack. Some fans think Bear, Paddy Kirk’s missing father, will come across Mack by accident ahead of his big storyline on the soap.

Taking to X, one fan suggested: “Random thought but anyone else think bear will find Mackenzie anything is possible.” Another fan theorised: “Never thought of that. No-one knows where Bear is, maybe he’ll hear Mack shouting for help & rescue him.”

Fans know that this could be the end of killer John in one way or another, with him taking revenge on husband Aaron after his fling with his ex Robert, John’s brother. In the latest episode John vowed no one could have Aaron if he couldn’t, dragging him into a gorge – but will they survive?
