With Kyalami ready to host the world’s fastest drivers, Formula One might just be making that long-awaited return to South Africa.

Midrand, South Africa (09 September 2025) – South Africa buckle up! After years of whispers, rumours, and quiet negotiations, the world’s biggest motorsport is finally set to make its long-awaited return to South African soil. And where else but the iconic Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit?

On 5 September 2025, Cabinet officially gave the green light for Kyalami’s bid to host the F1 Grand Prix from 2027 to 2029, with the possibility of extending beyond. Backed by private sector sponsors and both Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie and Formula One’s governing body (FIA), this marks a defining moment for South African motorsport and for Africa as a whole, which has not hosted a Grand Prix since 1993.

Kyalami is nestled between Johannesburg and Pretoria and it is no stranger to the high-octane drama. The circuit has already seen over 20 Grand Prix races, countless legends, and a fair share of unforgettable moments. Now, after years of upgrades, the track is set to become Africa’s only FIA Grade 1 circuit, approved in June this year. With safety improvements and world-class facilities, Kyalami will be ready to roar.

Of course, the debate over location is not quite over. Cape Town, with its global appeal and beautiful scenery, has plenty of fans pushing for a street circuit around the Waterfront and DHL Stadium. But while Cape Town’s bid adds a glamorous twist, Kyalami’s history and infrastructure is that makes it the frontrunner, for now.

Beyond the thrill of watching Verstappen, Hamilton, and Leclerc go head to head or in this case wheel to wheel on local tarmac, the return of F1 promises a major economic boost. South Africans can expect packed hotels, buzzing restaurants, new jobs, and global cameras beaming South Africa’s energy, diversity, and resilience to millions around the world. Safe to say South Africa is back in the fast lane.

From its humble beginnings in 1961 to its revival in 2016 and now this new chapter, Kyalami’s story has always been about reinvention. And come 2027, the engines will fire up, signalling the return of South Africa to the world’s fastest stage.
