Anthony Martial is set to become the latest high-profile player to join Liga MX side CF Monterrey. Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday that the Frenchman is set to complete his medical before joining Monterrey, with Mexican outlet TUDN reporting that the Liga MX side will pay $4.5 million (€3.8m) to sign the forward from AEK Athens.
Martial joined the Greek Super League 1 side last summer after his contract with Manchester United expired. The Frenchman then managed nine goals and two assists in 24 games across all competitions. But AEK looked to offload Martial this summer due to his high salary and didn’t register the former French international for the UEFA Conference League squad.
Those high salary demands also torpedoed a previous transfer to Liga MX. According to a report, Pumas also wanted to sign Martial this summer but couldn’t agree personal terms with the forward. One of the richest teams in Concacaf and playing in one of the continent’s most lavish facilities, Monterrey had no issues meeting Martial’s financial demands.
Set to join Sergio Ramos – What Martial can expect at Monterrey
Once signed, Martial (€7m) will have the largest market value among all CF Monterrey players. The most valuable players in Rayados’ squad are former LaLiga stars Sergio Canales and Lucas Ocampos, with a market value of €6m each. The most prominent member of the squad, however, is former Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos. Ramos joined Rayados on a free transfer last February after his previous contract with Sevilla expired in the summer.
Martial would become the fifth player in the squad who has previously played for Sevilla. Ramos, as mentioned, is one; Ocampos also played for the LaLiga club, and so did Óliver Torres. Another player with a past at Sevilla is Mexican winger Jesús Corona. Canales, in the meantime, played for Sevilla’s city rivals Real Betis.
