The wait between turning 60 and reaching State Pension age feels like it’s getting longer and longer. That’s because it is. As the State Pension age increases, elderly members of the UK are finding they are having to fork out for more and more as the years go on.

We have compiled a list of discounts and freebies available to people over the age of 60, regardless of whether they are retired or not. While most people do not retire until they reach state pension age—set to rise to 67 next year—there are still many benefits that can be accessed once they turn 60.

In the UK, those aged 60 and over can enjoy perks such as free bus travel, free prescriptions, and discounted food, among various other offers. These discounts and freebies can significantly impact individuals’ finances, potentially saving them hundreds of pounds, especially if they frequently travel or go out for leisure activities.

Below is a list of some of the offers that people over the age of 60 may be eligible to claim.

Free bus travel

The free bus pass scheme has slightly different rules for each local authority area of the UK and can vary from council to council as well as between constituent nations of the UK. Those in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland can apply for one when they turn 60, but in most areas of England you need to have reached State Pension age to apply.

There are only a few exceptions to the rule, including London and Merseyside, where you can apply for a free bus pass when you’re 60.

The pass previously provided free travel at any time, but in most areas it is now only available for off-peak travel – between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday and all day at weekends.

It is generally recommended that you check your local authority website before travelling. If you have a Disabled Person’s Bus Pass, you can still travel within the same time restrictions, despite recent debates in parliament.

Coach discounts

Individuals over 60 in England and Wales can enjoy discounted bus fares by obtaining a Senior Coachcard from National Express, which offers one-third off regular prices. The card costs £15, plus an additional £3 for postage.

In addition to the fare discount, the Senior Coachcard provides access to extra offers, such as £15 return tickets available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays when booked three or more days in advance. Cardholders can also receive a 15 percent discount on the price of an adult Fully Flexible fare.

Train discounts

People over the age of 60 are eligible for a Senior Railcard, which provides discounts on a variety of ticket types, including many First Class, Standard, Advance, and off-peak bookings.

The cost of a Senior Railcard is £30 for one year or £70 for three years. Please note that the railcard cannot be used for journeys during morning peak hours in London and the South East/Network Rail area.

It’s important to check with the service provider regarding any restrictions associated with the railcard before booking your tickets, as these exemptions may vary by route and time. You can purchase a Senior Railcard online, at any staffed National Rail ticket office, or by calling 0345 3000 250.

Food discounts

If you are over 60, many restaurants and cafes offer discounts for early dinners. For instance, Dobbies Garden Centres provides a main meal and a cake for just £11.95 for customers over 60. This offer is available from Monday to Friday, between 12 PM and 3 PM.

Additionally, every Tuesday, individuals aged 60 and older can enjoy a 10% discount on their shopping at Iceland and The Food Warehouse, with no minimum spending requirement.

Theatre and cinema discounts

Many local cinemas and theaters offer concessionary rates for people over 60, including special ‘silver screen’ matinee showings. For instance, ODEON’s Silver Screen tickets are priced at just £3.50 and come with complimentary tea, coffee, and biscuits before the film. It’s a good idea to check directly with the theaters or cinemas for these discounts.

Additionally, the National Theatre provides a £20 discount on midweek matinees for seniors over 60, while the Royal Shakespeare Company offers a 20% discount on all seats for patrons over 65 for Monday and Tuesday evening performances, as well as all midweek matinees.

Prescriptions and healthcare discounts

In Scotland and Wales, prescriptions are free for everyone, while in England, they are free only for individuals who are 60 years old and above. NHS-funded eye tests are available at no cost for people over 60, and dental treatment is free for anyone receiving pension guarantee credit.

Additionally, several healthcare retailers offer discounts to individuals over the age of 60. For example, if you’re over 60 and purchase a pair of glasses from Specsavers for £70 or more, you will receive a 20% discount. This offer applies to frames, lenses, and any extra options, such as treatments that protect your lenses or provide sun protection.

Furthermore, Boots the chemist has a rewards program for those over 60, which allows members to earn double points on their Advantage Card.

Days out

Many museums offer discounts for senior citizens, and both English Heritage and the National Trust provide reduced membership rates. Discounted matchday and season tickets for football, cricket, and rugby games are available to individuals typically aged 65 and over.
