On Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 12th, show host Jimmy Kimmel accused Donald Trump of worsening the political divide in America that has re-entered the discourse after the fatal assassination of conservative politician Charlie Kirk.

While speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on September 10th, Kirk was shot in the neck. After a long manhunt, a 22-year-old Utah native named Tyler Robinson was arrested and charged with suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm, and obstruction of justice.

Before Robinson’s arrest, Jimmel went live on his late-night show and hit out at Trump for his immediate response to the assassination. He branded the killing “senseless” and began by criticising extreme responses on both sides.

He also previously made a statement online which read, “Can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human? On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”

Back on the show, Kimmel said, “With all these terrible things happening, you would think that our president would at least make an attempt to bring us together, but he didn’t.” He then showed posts from previous presidents, such as Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, who issued a quick statement condemning political violence. Trump instead blamed Democrats for their rhetoric for the murder.

Kimmel highlighted the irony here: “The man who told a crowd of supporters that maybe the Second Amendment people should do something about Clinton. The man who said he wouldn’t mind if someone shot through the fake news media. The man who unleashed a mob on the Capitol and said Liz Cheney should face nine barrels shooting at her for supporting his opponent, blames the radical left for their rhetoric.”

For the next ten minutes, Kimmel tore into Trump and his surrounding allies. The clip has over two million views at the time of writing.

Kimmel’s take-down of Trump didn’t go down well with the White House. Their spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, responded to Kimmel’s criticism via Fox News Digital, stating, “President Trump speaks the truth. Every single night, Jimmy Kimmel gets on TV and divides the American people by fueling hatred and spreading lies about the President, his supporters, and any American who doesn’t agree with his worldview.”

Jackson continuing on behalf of the White House, “he only thing he should be doing on air is apologizing for his divisive rhetoric — and Kimmel is an absolute ghoul for pointing fingers at President Trump following the tragic assassination of his dear friend, Charlie Kirk.”
