An NRL legend who has been strongly linked with a move to St Helens is reportedly having ‘second thoughts’ about the switch.

Canberra Raiders star Josh Papali’i is in the final year of his contract and having explained that he has no wish to play against his beloved Raiders, it seemed he was set for a Super League move.

St Helens have been identified as the likely destination although head coach Paul Wellens played his cards close to his chest when asked about the veteran forward.

Responding to reports, Wellens said: “All I can say is I’ve read the same things but I can’t really comment too much on paper speculation.

“He’s amongst many players in Super League and the NRL I admire. He’s an international, State of Origin player, he’s done a lot in the game and there’s a lot to like about him, as there is many players down there.”

The latest reports now indicate that Papali’i might not make the switch to St Helens in a major blow for the Super League club.

Josh Papali’i in line for new Canberra contract in big blow to St Helens

Danny Weidler of Channel Nine took to social media to report that Papali’i is having “second thoughts” over a Super League move.

Weidler posted: “Josh Papali’ is having second thoughts about wanting to go to England. The question has been in Raiders HQ whether he can stay one more year. It’s under consideration.”

It would be a major blow for St Helens if they were to miss out on Papali’i with the forward seemingly set to be the Morgan Knowles replacement, with the Englishman moving to the Dolphins at the end of the year.

Papali’i’s intent to move to Super League came after Canberra had reportedly told him that no deal for 2026 was on the table but his impressive form, which saw him earn a State of Origin recall, has seemingly helped change the club’s mind.

He’s already become the club’s leading appearance maker, having surpassed the previous record of 318 and a new deal would see him potentially chase down a milestone such as 350 games.
