Andy Murray has revealed that he and Emma Raducanu have cleared the air after he bowed out of Wimbledon last year.
The pair were due to compete in mixed doubles together at SW19 in what was set to be his farewell match at the British Grand Slam, but Raducanu withdrew before the game. She blamed “some stiffness” in her wrist for her decision to pull out.
Raducanu subsequently reached the fourth round in singles, losing to Lulu Sun. However, her decision not to partner Murray in the mixed doubles infuriated many, including his mother, Judy.
“I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles,” Raducanu said at the time. “I’m disappointed as I was really looking forward to playing with Andy but I’ve got to take care.”
Murray was reportedly disappointed and his mother Judy branded Raducanu’s withdrawal as “astonishing”. Veteran tennis star Murray was unable to find a replacement partner under Wimbledon’s regulations.
Raducanu later offered an apology and Murray has revealed details of their conversations, emphasising that any animosity is firmly behind them. Murray’s final game at Wimbledon proved to be in doubles alongside his brother Jamie.
“We exchanged multiple messages since Wimbledon and things were fine after we cleared everything up,” Murray told The Times, via the Express, about his relationship with Raducanu.

“It was obviously a pretty emotional time for me and everyone around me, so it was hard but, like I said, I was really happy with the way that my career finished.
“I got to play my last match at Wimbledon with my brother. Emma’s not someone that beforehand we were communicating all the time or discussing ideas about her game and things like that, so that hasn’t changed.”
Raducanu, and Murray’s apparent successor Jack Draper, are now spearheading British tennis, but the Scottish legend is deliberately avoiding discussing their performances in the media.

“I know when I was a young British player I found it very, very unhelpful when people that you knew or looked up to were being critical of you after losses publicly,” he explained. “You respect their opinions and often they might differ from what your coach is telling you.
“When you’re 20 years old, you’re still responsible for the team that you employ. If you’ve got an ex-British No. 1 or an ex-world No. 1 saying they don’t agree with how you hit your forehand or the strategy you use in matches, it can be a bit undermining.
“I know pundits have to do that, but it’s really not helpful for young players, in particular, who maybe are not able to block that out and trust their coaches. If any of the younger British players ever want to talk to me privately, I would always do that.”
Former US Open champion Raducanu reached the third round in three of the four Grand Slams this year, also exiting in the second round of the French Open. Meanwhile, Draper got to the fourth round of both the Australian and French Opens before suffering second-round defeats at Wimbledon and the US Open.
