Since joining the METRONET Byford Rail Extension Project in early 2024, FSC Civil has placed Aboriginal employment at the heart of its operations – creating pathways for Aboriginal people and new workforce entrants to build lasting careers in the construction industry.

Instead of relying only on traditional recruitment methods that favour prior experience, FSC has partnered with Indigenous Management Services (IMS), an Indigenous labour hire company, to connect with Aboriginal candidates keen to begin or restart their careers. This approach reflects FSC’s belief that motivation and potential are just as valuable as experience.

FSC General Manager, Mairead Breen, said: “We are deeply committed to increasing Aboriginal participation across our operations. By offering a wide range of roles—from entry-level to skilled trades—we’re able to provide meaningful employment opportunities to people who may not have had access to them before. Our tailored onboarding system ensures every new hire receives the support they need to succeed, including guidance on company standards, communication protocols and safety practices.” This approach has earned praise across the project.

Terika Horwood, Senior Aboriginal Participation Advisor for the MetCONNX Alliance, said: “FSC’s commitment to Aboriginal employment is both inspiring and impactful. Their dedication to inclusive hiring practices helps foster a sense of purpose among employees and strengthens community connections. By prioritising Aboriginal participation, FSC is contributing to reconciliation and helping build a workforce that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve.”

Total time on project, January 2024 – April 2025:

Aboriginal employees: 16
Aboriginal work hours: 3.06%

These figures highlight FSC’s commitment to the MetCONNX Alliance’s broader goal of equity and inclusion in infrastructure delivery.

Employment opportunities across METRONET projects support the METRONET Gnarla Biddi Aboriginal Engagement Strategy and a long-term commitment to present opportunities for Noongar and other Aboriginal peoples for direct employment and career development.
