A crocodile bit off more than it could chew when attacking an elephant that was infringing in its watery habitat.

Sufri Johny of Sandakan, Sabah in Malaysia captured video of the elephant as it made its way to the banks of the Kinabatangan River.

A crocodile thought it could take down the hefty meal, leaping out of the water and trying to put its jaws around the elephant’s neck.

But the elephant was having none of it, as seen in Johny’s Instagram video on Nature Is Metal.

“If I were to come out and tell you what made this crocodile decide out of the blue to test his luck and attack an elephant, you know I would be lying,” Nature Is Metal wrote in its description on Instagram. “The truth is, the only being on the planet who knows what triggered this attack is the one with the toothy grin and lofty ambitions for something greater.

“As a complete guess, seeing the submerged elephant might have tricked the croc into thinking that it was something more manageable than, oh, something like a member of the largest terrestrial species in existence crossing the river. In any case, the elephant barely got a scratch on it, and now he’s got an interesting yarn to spin when he gets back to the herd.”
