All three films in The Godfather trilogy have landed a new streaming home in the UK, though the legendary crime saga won’t be quite as you remember it – here’s everything you need to know.

The film series, which is based on Mario Puzo’s 1969 novel of the same name, tells the story of the Corleones, a crime family based in New York City who gradually rise to become a major player in the American Mafia.

The three films, which were released in 1972, 1974 and 1990 respectively, were all directed and co-written by Francis Ford Coppola, with the stacked cast including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall and James Caan.

What to Read Next

Widely considered to be one of the greatest trilogies of all time, The Godfather series is now available to stream in the UK on Netflix, with all three instalments being added to the streamer today.

While The Godfather and The Godfather Part II remain untouched, the final entry – originally titled The Godfather Part III – will be slightly different, with the Netflix version being the 2020 re-release The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone.

While the film boasts a different title, the film is mostly the same as its original release, with edits being made to the beginning and ending of the film as well as some musical cues. The recut version is marginally shorter, being trimmed from 162 to 158 minutes.

The recut version is considered to be Puzo and Coppola’s preferred edition of the film, with the director saying: “With these changes and the restored footage and sound, to me, it is a more appropriate conclusion to The Godfather and The Godfather Part II.”

The series has garnered acclaim, winning a total of nine Academy Awards from 28 nominations. The first two instalments both won Best Picture, while the third attained a nomination for the top award.

There is a marked difference in the approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with Part III’s score being 66% as opposed to 97% and 96% for the first two films. The Godfather Coda fared better than the original version, with its approval having rating of 86%.

While The Godfather saga is now available on Netflix, one film that will soon be leaving the service is The Mercy, with the British biographical drama due to be removed from the streamer on 4 October.
