Given that manager Dario Vidosic made it clear he joined Brighton last year with the ambition to be WSL champions, failing to win either of their first two games of the season was a huge disappointment.

But two home victories later and everything looks much better on the south coast.

An assault on the WSL title may still be a way off but Brighton – in sixth spot but just three points off Manchester United – are building a team with immense promise.

At the heart of it are two England heroes – one in Kirby, who earned that status over many years, and teenager Agyemang, whose exploits in Switzerland have granted her such acclaim while still in the infancy of her career.

While Kirby has retired from international football, Agyemang still has years left to grow her legend.

In the here and now, though, it is Brighton benefiting with Kirby showing all the touch, creativity and weight of pass that have made her an all-time WSL great as she combined so effectively with Seike down the right.

Meanwhile, Agyemang is a marked woman this season after her Euros exploits and, while there is still so much room for development, she is playing with a maturity beyond her years.

As well as tucking away her only chance, she held up the ball well, used it smartly and never gave the Everton defenders a moment’s peace.

Tellingly, in a game where Brighton ultimately had to battle to get over the line, Agyemang never shirked a challenge as she won a game-high 10 duels, while a success of three tackles were only bettered by Kirby.

With stars of England’s past, present and future in their ranks, it’s easy to see why the Seagulls have high hopes for this campaign.
