Northern Rail Launches Cross-Country Art Search to Commemorate 200 Years of Railways
To celebrate two centuries since the opening of the modern railway, Northern — one of the UK’s largest train operators — has announced a nationwide art competition, inviting people of all ages to get involved in a modern, vibrant celebration of rail heritage. One of the key elements of the wider Railway 200 programme, the competition aims to pay homage to the heritage of train travel through art reminiscent of the now iconic British Railways posters of the 1920s and 1950s.
For this special Anniversary we come together to celebrate a momentous step in the journey of British transport & Northern are challenging the nation’s artists to re-imagine classic railway poster art for today’s audience: in a modern, fun, and engaging way. Competitors are invited to take the traditional style of poster into the 21st century, with a sense of fun and excitement which still represents rail travel as an attractive and relevant means of transport in today’s railway.
It is not only a homage to the visual language of early railway advertising but more generally a way of using creativity to link past and present. We want to create positive public interaction over rail heritage and also highlight to others the beauty, culture and landscapes that are available through Northern’s extensive rail network.
Successful artworks will be exhibited in high-profile locations in train stations throughout the north of England, making the ordinary, extraordinary. The galleries will tour on Northern’s network and provide impact and local interest to their platforms, concourses and waiting areas, providing a culturally unique experience for both artists and passengers.
Contributors have been asked to capture everything from rolling green fields of the countryside, historic market towns, bustling cities and seaside gems in the North. Contestants could use their art installations to highlight the diversity and cool of rail-connected communities, inspiring a fresh approach to taking to the rails regionally.
The competition is split up into three age categories, all of which are inclusive: children under 12, ages 12-17, and adults 18 and older. This format makes space for people at every level of their own art journey — from a novice to a professional illustrator — to bring their vision and voice to the celebration.
Entries will be assesed by a panel curated by Northern made up of industry professionals from the world of art and design. The four four key criteria the judges will be using to review the submissions include, artistic creativity, originality, visual impact, and fit with the Railway 200 theme.
For uniform configuration and improved presentation, all art should be submitted in an A3 portrait format, and as high resolution digital package. If you’re involved and you can’t be there on time, make sure to send your completed entry to my email by Monday, August 25. Early response is encouraged to prevent running out of availability.
Winners will be notified by email in the first week of September. As well as a public acknowledgment of their work, winning artists will be seen buy thousands of rail travellers across the north, and a place in a campaign that rewards creative talent and transport heritage in equal measure.
Apart from the tournament, the event represents Northern’s dedication to diversity and community outreach. It is an amalgam of the arts and transport worlds, reminding commuters and the public generally how railways have always sparked the imagination, from revolutions and artistic movements through to everyday life and leisure.
As Britain celebrates 200 years of railway innovation — which has transformed its economy and connectivity, as well as its cultural landscape — Northern’s art competition serves as a moment’s pause, to acknowledge the journey. It is a prompt to reflect on the past and its milestones, via today’s lens, and to try squinting a bit into whatever is on the horizon.

It’s a reminder that even in a digital age of travel, a timeless love for rail persists — one canvas at a time.
