A number of schools went into lockdown this afternoon after police were told a man was walking around with an axe. The ECHO received several reports this afternoon that Middlefield Community Primary School on Alder Wood Avenue in Speke was affected by the incident.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO that at around 2.45pm on Tuesday September 30, officers attended Central Way in Speke after receiving a report of a man with an axe. Police confirmed that several schools went into lockdown in the area.
However further reports from children in the area later established that a man was chopping a tree on Oldbridge Road.

No further sightings have been reported and the schools have now been reopened.
When the ECHO contacted Middlefield Primary for comment, a staff member denied reports of lockdown claiming it was a rumour.
