Frauds, the highly-anticipated heist drama starring Jodie Whittaker and Suranne Jones, will get under way on ITV this weekend, but we could see a very different side to the Doctor Who and Broadchurch star in her latest role.

The six-part series tells the story of Sam (Whittaker) and Bert (Jones), who reunite after a decade apart following the latter’s release from prison, which has been granted on the grounds of compassion.

Despite having lived a quiet life in the intervening period, Sam finds herself drawn back to her old friend, with the opportunity of a multi-million pound heist proving to be a perfect catalyst to revive an old friendship.

Created by Jones and Anne-Marie O’Connor, the eagerly-awaited series is primed to hit the small screen on Sunday (5 October), with Whittaker building excitement as she revealed that viewers will see a different side to her.

“[Suranne is] very aware that other actresses want to play parts that are maybe a world away from what people see them as, or giving them the opportunity to show different sides,” she said (via RadioTimes).

The actor, who has also appeared in One Night and Toxic Town, continued by talking about her collaboration with Jones, sharing: “We haven’t worked together because there’s not many things that have this kind of dynamic at the forefront.

“But I would reiterate, [for] a lot of our work, ‘fun’ wouldn’t be the headline of a piece, whereas this read so differently […] What a genre to be in! Knowing that this is an opportunity to just play and to bat off somebody… I already knew we would have an amazing time.”

In addition to Whittaker and Jones, the stacked cast for Frauds includes Christian Cooke, Horacio Colomé, Talisa Garcia, Elizabeth Berrington, Lee Boardman, Abdul Salis, Kate Fleetwood and Karan Gill.

Billed as a “complex and addictive story of friendship, deception and survival”, Frauds sees Jones take on a larger role behind the camera as she also serves as an executive producer, with the actor previously expressing her excitement at the project.

“Working on Frauds with Anne-Marie and Monumental for the last two years has been a wild ride,” she said. “We took the idea of toxic female friendship and turned it on its head to give the heist genre an emotional heartbeat.”

Frauds premieres on ITV1 and ITVX on Sunday 5 October.
