Members and facilitators from Barrow, Ulverston and Millom united to make the event a success, which was held at Furness Golf Club on Sunday, September 21.

With prizes up for grabs for the eventual winners, the main aim of the day was to promote the work done by the clubs, which focus on men’s mental health.

A spokesperson from the Barrow branch said: “A massive thank you to Furness Golf Club for hosting the very first Andy’s Man Club golf open – the weather was great and the golfers were even better.

“To all those guys who played, it is much appreciated – not only did you raise £400 for Andy’s Man Club, you also helped promote our cause.”

Players came from clubs in Silecroft, Ulverston, Knott End, Barrow, Forest Park, Eskdale, Driffield and Dunnerholme to help share the Andy’s Man Club message – that it is okay to talk.

The organisers were particularly amazed to see people travelling from outside Cumbria to take part, adding to the strong support on show.

And, now that the inaugural open is behind them, the team’s attention is already turning to next year and bringing the event back.

The spokesperson added: “We’re already looking forward to a bigger and better competition next year – a special thanks to Club Captain Jon Clarke.

“We’ve already worked with Jon at Furness Golf Club about next year’s competition – it’s going to be more of an event with a function at the night time, with music, raffles and hopefully more.”

Andy’s Man Club is a national charity with regional branches that was named after Andrew Roberts, who took his own life at the age of 23 in 2016.

The clubs offer peer-to-peer support, encouraging men to talk about their feelings in the hope of combatting high suicide rates.
