V/H/S Halloween

V/H/S Halloween

It is officially October, and if you’re like me, you are going to jam in as many horror movies as possible before Halloween gets here. I mean, I watch horror movies anyway, but it’s time to get some extras watched. Now, there’s a specific one to add to the list.

There is only one 100% Rotten Tomatoes-scored horror movie out in 2025 from what I can tell, at least with any significant amount of reviews in, and that is V/H/S Halloween, the latest entry in the lengthy horror anthology series that is reviewing better than all the rest. Here’s the synopsis:

“A collection of Halloween-themed videotapes unleashes a series of twisted, blood-soaked tales, turning trick-or-treat into a struggle for survival.”

Those familiar with the V/H/S series know its concept by now, a shared world of “video tapes” that each contain some horrible story directed by unique directors ranging from the unknown to soon-to-be-famous to the already-famous. There are now eight installments in the V/H/S franchise which began in 2012 and is still going 13 years later with great new entries. They’re not all winners, of course. Here’s how they stack up via Rotten Tomatoes score:

V/H/S Halloween – 100%V/H/S Beyond – 90%V/H/S 94 – 90%V/H/S 99 – 75%V/H/S 85 – 74%V/H/S/2 – 70%V/H/S – 55%V/H/S Viral – 32%

It’s a series that has, generally speaking, gotten better in time, and now that has culminated with the release of Halloween, which as of now, is the best-scored of them all. And with that 100%, that also makes V/H/S Halloween presently the best-scored horror movie of 2025. Here’s that list:

V/H/S Halloween – 100%Sinners – 97%Weapons – 94%Companion – 93%Final Destination: Bloodlines – 92%Together – 90%28 Years Later – 89%Bring Her Back – 89%The Long Walk – 89%Presence – 88%Nosferatu – 84%Drop – 83%The Monkey – 77%Heart Eyes – 77%The Gorge – 62%Borderline – 59%M3GAN 2.0 – 58%Until Dawn – 52%

It is, of course, entirely possible that as more reviews come in that V/H/S Halloween loses that 100% score. And I don’t think anyone would seriously make the case that it’s better than Sinners or Weapons, but hey, it seems like it’s going to be pretty good. Like the others, it’s a Shudder original, a service you should automatically have if you’re into horror, and it is officially out on Thursday, October 3. Check it out then.
