Regardless of the fallacies, inconsistencies, even immaterialness to the true nature of bike racing, there is no doubt the impending culmination of the current three-year WorldTour promotion and relegation cycle will provide drama.

2025 signals the end of the second three-year period where teams’ UCI points are totalled up and the top 18 are awarded WorldTour status for the next three years.

Unsurprisingly, UAE Team Emirates-XRG leads these rankings with 105,000 points and Visma-Lease a Bike is second, with 72,000.

And at first glance, as we can see on FirstCycling’s useful live tracker, the race for 18th doesn’t seem overly exciting. With only three weeks left in the WorldTour and ProTour seasons, Intermarché-Wanty lead Uno-X Mobility by well over 1,000 points.

In the second from the left column, you can see how XDS-Astana’s 2025 points total has lifted them from almost certain relegation to safety.

However, amid ongoing rumours that Lotto and Intermarché-Wanty are set to merge, that would see one of the 18 WorldTour spots left vacant.
