Aimee Lou Wood has admitted that she has no regrets after calling out Saturday Night Live comedians for their cruel joke about her appearance.
In a controversial SNL sketch earlier this year, Aimee was portrayed by Sarah Sherman, who wore fake large teeth and spoke in an over-the-top British accent to joke about fluoride, which is known to impact dental hygiene negatively and lead to tooth decay.
After seeing the sketch, Aimee took to social media to call the skit out, saying it was “mean and unfunny” and jokes must be done in a “more cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way”.
In a recent interview with the BBC, she doubled down, saying: “I don’t regret saying it because it was breaking a pattern, which is what I would usually do – what I did when I was younger and got bullied.”
She added: “I have a choice here to go in and be embarrassed about it and just say ‘I didn’t like that. It was mean’.”

She shared that SNL apologised for the skit and Sarah sent her a flower bouquet. Aimee thanked Sarah publicly, posting a picture of the flowers on Instagram. She made it clear that she was not “hating on [Sherman] but was “hating on the concept”.
Aimee said during a promotional tour for her new BBC romantic-comedy drama Film Club that “no matter what chaos came from it, I’m still happy for me and my personal journey that I said something.”
“I’ve gone into meetings with directors I’ve admired and burst into tears and not been able to say a word and I think that kind of urge is always to correct, to say ‘I’m so sorry that I just did something messy’ and actually you didn’t do anything wrong,” she continued.

This is not the first time Aimee has spoken out about her appearance. She told Stylist back in 2020: “I had it in my brain that I’m not conventional-looking enough and that’s a mental barrier I’ve had to overcome.”
Whilst in the past it has affected her self-esteem, she was thrilled to see the impact it was having on fans who could relate to her. On the Jonathan Ross Show back in March she said: “I mean I can’t believe the impact my teeth are having,” and added: “Because the Americans can’t believe [my teeth], but they’re all being lovely.”
The actress highlighted how this reception made her feel great, especially because of the remarks she used to face in the past because of it.
