The 12 members of Keegan Bradley’s USA Ryder Cup team will be away licking their wounds rather than playing in the Sanderson Farms Championship, so there is a good opportunity for some of the PGA Tour’s up-and-coming players to make their mark in the second tournament of the Fall series.

Kevin Yu is back to defend the title he won 12 months ago and one player who was in action at Bethpage Black, Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard, will hope to bounce back after losing both of his matches in the big showdown.

First win could arrive for Thorbjornsen

For many of golf’s big stars, 2025 is starting to wind down after the Ryder Cup, but that provides great chances for others to earn FedEx Cup points that could come in very handy next year and also the opportunity to claim PGA Tour prizes.

One player who looks primed to fill such a role is 24-year-old Michael Thorbjornsen, who has displayed plenty of ability this season, which suggests a maiden success may not be far away.

He came close to opening his account at the Corales Puntacana in April – a similarly low-grade contest – before proving himself in stronger company last time out at the Procore Championship, where 11 of Bradley’s charges were present.

Thorbjornsen was at the Country Club of Jackson 12 months ago and made a flying start with an opening round of 63, and there looks a decent chance he will be able to justify favoritism in the first event of October.

Hossler geared to go one better

Beau Hossler gave Yu the most to think about 12 months ago and he could go one better as the 30-year-old also looks to break his PGA Tour duck.

Course form figures of 10-57-28-2 should encourage an investment this week, as well as the fact he has finished in the top 15 in four of his last six tournaments.

He was fourth in July’s Barracuda Championship, a competition of a similar stature to this, and he can give another good account of himself this week.

Higgo has the chance to shine

South African Garrick Higgo is just the sort of player who should fancy his chances of going well here, even though he missed the cut 12 months ago.

He was third and 16th on his two previous visits to the Mississippi venue and knows what it is like to be in the winner’s circle after taking the Corales Puntacana.

Finishing seventh when Scottie Scheffler won the Procure Championship will have provided another confidence boost so it would not be a surprise if he was a factor in lesser company this week.
