Willie Peters is set to coach against his Hull KR players later this year after the Robins boss was confirmed as an assistant coach for Australia in the upcoming Ashes test.

Peters, who is in contention for back-to-back Super League coach of the year awards at Tuesday’s Rugby League Awards evening, will assist Kevin Walters in the first Ashes series for 22 years.

For now, Peters’ focus is on Saturday, as Rovers look to win their first Super League Grand Final and complete a historic treble in the process.

He will then join the Kangaroos camp in preparation for their three-test series against Shaun Wane’s men. The England squad is set to be named on Monday with the likes of Jez Litten, Mikey Lewis and Joe Burgess in contention for selection.

“It’s a huge honour to be working with the Kangaroos for the upcoming ashes,” Peters said.

“There’s so much history between Australia and England and it’s great to see they’ve brought the Ashes back. I’m really proud to be involved and supporting Head Coach, Kevin Walters. I’m looking forward to linking up with the side and preparing for the Ashes.

“For now, the main focus is this Saturday’s Grand Final with Hull KR and putting everything into this week.”

The series opens at Wembley Stadium before the second Test takes place at Everton. The series will conclude at Headingley, the home of Leeds Rhinos.
