Head of technical scouting and loan management Robbie Thelwell will move north of the border to join up with his father Kevin, after he was appointed the Gers’ sporting director this summer.
He’ll become Rangers’ head of recruitment according to the Rangers Review, joining fellow ex-Canary Russell Martin as the 39-year-old battles with calls for his sacking as head coach.
Thelwell was the reported subject of Premier League interest thanks to his performance in his time in Norfolk, but goes into a high-pressure environment after Rangers’ poor start to the season.
They’re currently eighth in the Scottish Premiership, although a late winner from Colney academy graduate Max Aarons earned them a first league win of the campaign at Livingston on Sunday.
City are believed to be considering their options for replacing Thelwell, with both internal and external candidates on the table. Loan management had been allocated outside the recruitment department until becoming part of his remit in July 2024, when first team coach and loan manager Andy Hughes left for Leicester City.
Thelwell initially moved to Carrow Road in September 2023 as head of technical scouting. He arrived from Aston Villa, where he was first a video scout and then a first team scout during a near-three-year spell.
Before then he worked for Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he was a technical scout between October 2016 and December 2020.
Thelwell played a big role in a busy summer for Norwich, aiding the scouting process as sporting director Ben Knapper completed 12 senior signings. Among those purchases were £6.9million marquee arrival Mathias Kvistgaarden and Premier League winner Jeffrey Schlupp, while Thelwell was also involved when the likes of Ante Crnac, Jose Cordoba and Anis Ben Slimane arrived.
