One Super League club have been dealt a recruitment blow, with an NRL target set to snub a move to the Northern Hemisphere in order to stay in the Australian competition.
St Helens fans will be getting a case of deja vu, having already lost out on a big-name Aussie superstar. Josh Papali’i looked set to make the move to the north of England, however that switch was cancelled when current club Canberra Raiders decided to offer him a new contract, which he accepted.
Now, the Saints look set to miss out on another NRL prop forward, with recently-linked Melbourne Storm star Tui Kamikamica set to remain Down Under.
The recent NRL Grand Finalist was the only player to take the field in Sunday’s clash to not have a contract lined up for next year, however that may be about to change, with the Saints set to be let down once again.
Kamikamica’s contract at the Storm runs out at the end of this season, and is reportedly on around $400,000 AUD per year. For him to stay at the club, he would need to take a huge wage cut down to $160,000 – the league’s minimum wage – and that is something he isn’t prepared to do.
For the first time in his career, he looks set for a switch, and it is reported that South Sydney Rabbitohs are looking at signing the 21-time Fiji international.
Having just lost Jacob Host to the Saints, the Rabbitohs will be looking to fill that hole in their 30-man squad, and Kamikamica would be a suitable replacement.
However, for the Bunnies to be able to afford the 31-year-old, they themselves will have to move another player on, so a deal is far from being agreed yet.
