One major UK charity shop chain has revealed it will be closing 88 of its stores by May next year, with five closures taking place across Greater Manchester.

Cancer Research UK announced it will close 88 of its stores, saying that without this action many of its shops would struggle to remain “viable”.

The charity also revealed it will look to close a further 100 stores by April 2026, as part of plans to cut nearly half of its high street outlets.

Closures are also expected to impact approximately 600 staff members as well as up to 3,000 volunteers however the charity said it was committed to suppoerting affected staff to find new job opportunities if redeployment is not possible.

On the closures, Chief Executive Michelle Mitchell said: “Without action, many of our shops would struggle to remain viable. By focusing on a smaller, more efficient retail operation, we can enhance our funding for life-saving cancer research and better serve our customers, staff, and volunteers.

“We understand that this news may be difficult, and we have made these decisions with careful consideration. Our commitment to supporting everyone affected during this transition remains a top priority, and we will provide clear information and assistance throughout the process.”

The chain also confirmed, that alongside store closures, it will also be halting its online marketplace at the beginning of next year.
