The former builders’ premises – within Keighley Business Centre, South Street – underwent a transformation.
And in less than a year, Switch Hitters Boxing Club has grown rapidly.
It now caters for around 40 members a week, offering classes and personal training for anyone aged 12 and over.
The expansion means the club is already outgrowing its current space, and is seeking a larger venue.
Founder Jonny Greenwood says: “We’ve worked hard to create an environment that is welcoming to everyone. Our sessions are designed to be inclusive and accessible to all levels and genders.
“Whether you’re a total newcomer or an experienced boxer, you will be welcomed with open arms.
“Over the past six months we’ve developed a reputation for being a fighters’ gym, with many here either active fighters already or looking to compete some day, but don’t let that put you off – we are open to everyone, regardless of your goals. We’ve had many people sign up to help improve their fitness, mental health and lives generally, with no intention of competing. We just want everybody to enjoy their time here.”
But the club is creating champions.
Jonny says: “We currently have seven titles in the gym, with more title fights lined up, so over the course of this year you can expect that number to increase.”
The club has announced its first major competitive fight night, set to take place at the town’s Victoria Hall on November 22.
Switch Hitters has won praise from Keighley MP Robbie Moore, who visited a boxing class and sparring session.
He says: “What Jonny and his team have built is outstanding and Switch Hitters is exactly the kind of community-led, youth-focused project we should all be backing.
“It was brilliant to see first-hand how the club is installing a real sense of discipline, determination and confidence into our young people, whilst also training boxing talent.
“With demand increasing each week, Switch Hitters has now outgrown its current space and is actively looking for a larger venue to accommodate more members and expand its activities, and I will be doing everything I can as MP to help the club grow and secure a new home in the future. A huge thanks to Jonny and the hardworking team of coaches at Switch Hitters for all that they do.”
