An already sizzling Qipco Champion Stakes is likely to get even hotter on Monday, with William Haggas keen to let Group 1 winner Economics loose against the likes of Ombudsman, Delacroix and Calandagan in Saturday’s showpiece event on British Champions Day.
Economics took his latest step towards Ascot when cantering in Newmarket on Sunday and, providing he scopes clean on Monday morning, last season’s Irish Champions Stakes winner looks set to be confirmed for Saturday’s £1.3 million Group 1 contest.
Off the track since finishing a disappointing sixth in last year’s Champion Stakes, Economics met with a setback when being prepared for Royal Ascot in June, and Haggas has had to play the waiting game with Sheikh Isa Salman Al Khalifa’s impressive chestnut.
