Tiger Woods announced that he underwent surgery for a collapsed disc in his spine.

The 15-time major winner said on social media that he had lumbar disk replacement surgery on Friday after experiencing pain in his lower back.

The 49-year-old also added that the surgery had been deemed a success.

A statement on Woods’ X account said: “After experiencing pain and lack of mobility in my back, I consulted with Doctors and Surgeons to have tests taken.

“The scans determined that I had a collapsed disc in L4/5, disc fragments and a compromised spinal canal. I opted to have my disc replaced yesterday, and I already know I made a good decision for my health and my back.

“On Friday, Tiger underwent lumbar disc replacement surgery in his L4/5 Lumbar spine for lower back symptoms.

“The surgery was deemed successful and performed by Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi and his team at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York.”

This was the second time Woods has undergone back surgery in just over a year.

He had an operation on his lumbar spine in September 2024.

Woods’ return to the course is currently unknown.

Tiger Woods’ injury issues

The former world number one has encountered many injury problems over the last decade.

He has undergone various back and knee surgeries in recent years, but has barely played since a serious car crash in 2021.

Woods said he was ‘lucky to be alive’ after his vehicle rolled and crashed into a ditch in Los Angeles.

He suffered multiple leg injuries and there were fears he would never play again.

It took him nine months before he was swinging a golf club again.

He ruptured his left Achilles while training and practising at home in March this year.

Woods has not featured since The Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2024 and planned to make a comeback for The Genesis Invitational earlier this year but pulled out due to the death of his mother the week before.

His only golfing appearances this year have been in the new TGL indoor competition.

The 49-year-old is currently ranked No. 2001 in the world and has played just 11 events since that car crash in February 2021.

He is more often seen as a spectator supporting his son Charlie.

TGL’s second second will officially kick-off on December 28 and that may be the next time we see him with a golf club in hand.
