England coach Shaun Wane has hailed Hull FC’s young wing sensation Lewis Martin as ‘the future of England’ but says the 21-year-old is not ready just yet for what the Australians will throw at his side.
Martin has established himself this year as one of Super League’s leading try-scorers, winning selection to the Dream Team after a dazzling campaign that saw him top the try scorer charts with 25.
Nominated for the Super League Young Player of the Year award, Marton missed out to St Helens’ teenage centre Harry Robertson, with Wane asked about both this week and how close the pair came to winning selection for the forthcoming Ashes series against Australia.
“They are very talented players and they are the future of England there is no doubt, but they are not ready for this physical battle that we have got coming up in the next few weeks,” said Wane, who elaborated further on what he looks for when making his selection for the national team.
“It’s not just about what players do on the field. We have got four weeks together and you need to be a certain sort of individual because you’re under pressure as soon as you wake up in the morning. These four weeks are very intense and you need to pick a certain sort of player.”
